A larger screen can obviously display a larger image, but if it can’t handle higher resolutions – or the upscaling techniques needed to enlarge low resolution content – you’re just paying for a big, blurry image. You need more pixels for a bigger screen, after all, and those extra pixels need to be up to the heavy-duty picture processing to make either HD or UHD content look good on a big screen.

The picture quality of this 8K monster looked phenomenal during CES demonstrations. As with the rollable TV, though, the currently unconfirmed price is likely to be in ‘if you have to ask, you probably can’t afford it’ territory.

We’re very interested in seeing how Samsung’s microLED technology shapes up as a competitor to OLED, and its Q9FN QLED TV showed some of the most impressive contrast performance we’ve seen. Much of that prowess comes through on Samsung’s midrange TVs as well, as demonstrated in the RU8000 series. This line of 4K TVs has the same feature-packed smart TV platform as Samsung’s flagship models and shows remarkably strong color performance (though it doesn’t reach the range of the Q9FN). Its features are largely Samsung-specific, however, and while its colors are excellent, its brightness is fairly low. At $1,399.99 for the 65-inch UN65RU8000FXZA we tested, we expect a brighter panel.

If you are looking for a 4K HDR TV on a tight budget of say, Rs 35,000 approx and looking for a big TV (in size), then you can consider the Shinco 55-inch S55QHDR10 4K HDR TV. Its picture performance for the asking price is really good, especially since the panel you get is a Samsung VA 10-bit panel with HDR 10 support and 55-inches! The smart features are bleak so you may want to spend an extra 6k and invest in the 4K Fire TV stick. Now that we’ve made your purchase decision easier, let’s dive into the review.

Grab the 55-inch LG OLED C9 Series 4K UHD Smart TV with AI ThinQ for $2,199.99 ($300 off) in the PCMag Shop while you can.

Unfortunately for early adopters, none of those features are any use just yet. Still, having HDMI 2.1 on board means the TV is as future-proof as a TV can get these days. When 4K/120 content is a reality, the C9 will be able to handle it. When soundbars and A/V receivers equipped to handle eARC come along, they’ll work together with the C9 to deliver totally uncompressed audio, including full-on Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. And when graphics cards for PCs and next-gen game consoles with HDMI 2.1 arrive, gamers will see the C9 automatically switching into low-latency mode and automatically adapting refresh rates to match the needs of the games they play.

The Gen 2 Alpha 9 chipset will additionally bring a revamped version of LG’s excellent WebOS smart TV system, with a particular focus on streamlining navigation. The webOS launcher bar will be more compact; will ditch the rather large ‘advertising’ blade on the left; and will add a second layer of contextual content link icons when you select one of the apps on the bottom row. The new webOS will also introduce a ‘Home Dashboard’ screen, from which you will be able to monitor and control any connected smart devices you might have on your network.

Sony 75-inch Class Z9F Series 4K HDR Dolby Vision Android LED TV (XBR75Z9F) — $5,998 (list price $8,998)

What Hisense did was simply add two additional mount points closer to the centerline to accommodate narrower platforms. Of course, this provides less lateral stability, but it’s generally longitudinal stability that’s worrisome with TVs. Hisense provides caps to cover the unused holes.

The LG 55SM90 (LG SM9000 in the US) is cheaper than the Sony but still costs more than the Q70. It has full array local dimming, and also includes NanoCell technology for better colours and deeper blacks, wider viewing angles, and the second generation Alpha7 processor. LG doesn’t support HDR10+ either, but like Sony there’s Dolby Vision and Atmos, along with webOS 4.5, Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa built-in, and an ultra low input lag.
