This is the ‘premium’ budget TCL 4K TV, the P648 Series, and probably the best deal around right now. It’s available in 43in, 50in, 55in and 65in sizes. I’ve seen this working in demonstration environments (as covered here), and its impact seems very impressive. HDR pictures look brighter and have more pronounced brightness peaks, while the AI sound option seems to do a much better job of adapting sound to the capabilities of each new LG TV’s speaker capabilities. Note that AI sound can also apply virtual 5.1-channel up-mixing to two-channel sources.

That’s a shame because the idea of a 65-inch TV that can compact itself down into a box the size of a TV cabinet is incredibly tempting. When it’s not in full-size TV mode, the screen can also be partially retracted to hide the black bars at the top and bottom of any content with a 21:9 cinematic aspect ratio, or it can rise up just a little bit to show smart TV notifications.

I was skeptical about Hisense’s move to array backlighting for its 2019 H8F 4K UHD TV series. Just last year, even the company’s second-tier H9E was side-lit, and first forays into technology don’t always turn out so great.

For those balking at the idea of picking a random size, have no fear. Television manufacturers tend to make their sets within quite rigid dimensions, meaning there are really only a handful of sizes you have to choose from.

As usual, Samsung has created a 4K UHD TV with superb upscaling power in its internal processor. The Q60R delivers excellent rendering of non-4K content across the board and while 1080p Blu-ray disc quality or high quality streamed 1080p movies will upscale at their absolute best on the Q60’s 4K HDR display, even regular 720p and even 480p SD resolution broadcast and DVD content will look positively superb unless you’re watching something that was just badly formatted or has delivery interruption problems. The Q60R even lets non-HDR non-4K content feeds benefit a bit from its high dynamic range specs. SDR movies or TV shows will play back with great general brightness while the Q60R’s overall high quality color delivery makes sure that even video sources without HDR color mastering look vibrant and nicely accurate. In other words, you don’t need purely 4K HDR video sources to get the most from an HDR TV like the Q60R.
