Samsung’s new 2019 QLED TV, the Q60 (Q60R) model is very similar to 2018’s lower-end QLED, the Q6F in terms of design. It also delivers somewhat similar performance on several key specs. However, in most ways, the overall performance quality of the Q60R is slightly or in some ways very inferior to that of its predecessor and even its physical build leaves more to be desired.

QLED, on the other hand, is a proprietary technology developed by Samsung. QLED uses a filter of quantum dots to enhance color and contrast, and make do with dimming zones rather than individual pixel control. QLED TVs are a lot brighter than OLEDs (thousands of nits versus hundreds) though can struggle to show both light and dark images at the same time as a result. There are OLED die-hards who hate the washed-out colors of overly bright TVs, while many with Samsung sets would find the far dimmer OLED displays far less impactful.

Samsung is also looking at the bigger picture with respect to content consumption, making a decision this year to stop manufacturing Blu-ray players as more and more content delivery switches to the cloud and streaming model for both consumer and professional applications.
