Organic light-emitting diode (OLED) TVs are some of the best you can buy, in both style and performance. The technology enables the panels to be incredibly thin while producing perfect black levels and a wide range of color. It’s also very expensive, which is why even LG’s "lower-end" OLEDC9 line costs more than its flagship Super UHD LCD TVs. The 65-inch OLEDC9 we tested goes for $3,499.99, so it’s not for budget-minded buyers. That said, it’s the most affordable OLED TV we’ve seen, and it offers one of the best pictures you can get, earning it our Editors’ Choice.
At a follow-up demo in a private room in New York’s Ace Hotel in May, executives walked me through the latest on XD. The basic idea is the same: bonding two LCD modules together improves the precision of standard LED local dimming.
As well as its premium QLED TVs, Samsung has announced three series of cheaper LED TVs. These use traditional LED color filtering to produce their pictures rather than Quantum Dots, meaning they won’t deliver the same sort of color range or brightness.

Sony had previously designed a separate 16K display that went on show at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport in 2014, but that looked like it was made up of dozens of smaller screens rather than presenting a single seamless picture.
In addition to the art-focused TV line, Samsung also announced pricing for its latest high-end soundbars, the Q Series. It offers four distinct models, the Q60, Q70, Q80, and Q90, which range in price from $500 to $1,700. The lower-tier models offer high-quality sound without satellite speakers, and top-end models like the Q90 boast a satellite subwoofer, rear speakers, and Dolby Atmos and DTS:X object-based surround sound support.
Even though it’s featuring a price cut, $400 is still a lot of dough to shell out in one go, and Best Buy knows that, which is why it’s offering customers in need of a helping hand the option to split that figure over a twelve-month period (with a few cents of interest thrown in), balancing out to a more affordable $33 per month.
Well, the H8F may not be “great”—that’s $2,000 LG E8 and Samsung Q9 territory—but for just $500, you get the high-quality color, blacks, and HDR of a much more expensive TV. In fact, after 15 minutes with the H8F, I double-checked the price list just to make sure I hadn’t confused it with something else. I was that impressed.
Even with slightly cool whites and skewed secondary colors out of the box, the E9 looks fantastic when displaying 4K HDR content. BBC’s Planet Earth II looks vibrant and natural, with the greens of the plants and the blues of the water appearing vibrant without seeming oversaturated. Fine details like tree bark and fur can be clearly seen both in direct light and in shade, without a hint of shadows appearing muddy or washed-out. It’s a superlative viewing experience, which for OLED TVs is the rule rather than the exception.
