From digital signage for registration areas and session venues to 4K TVs for theaters and the broadcast studio, LG displays were ubiquitous at the 2019 NAB Show. Dozens of 49-inch LG screens greeted attendees at hundreds of technical and business sessions. LG 70-, 65- and 55-inch 4K UHD TVs were used throughout the convention including the Futures Park in the North Hall, where among others, NAB PILOT, the AWARN Alliance and Trivini Digital featured LG displays.

Samsung has become a global leader in display manufacturing and still sits atop the heap in market share of televisions shipped annually. The IHS Technology report, “Public Displays Market Tracker,” states that Samsung captured 25.8% of the global market share for digital signage unit sales in 2018.

Otherwise, the new sets offer much of what we’ve seen from Sony’s TVs in the past. The OLED models continue to use Sony’s Acoustic Surface technology to vibrate the screen and turn it into an additional speaker, while select TVs in the range also include support for Netflix Calibrated Mode, IMAX Enhanced, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos. All the TVs will also continue to use the Android TV operating system. In the past we’ve had reservations about this OS because of its sluggishness, but Sony claims this year’s sets will ship with Android Oreo and should perform better.

The specs and metrics we’re going to cover here are basically what really decides if a 4K TV is worth buying or not. They’re its most important indicators of real performance and they disregard all the marketing and labeling fluff that manufacturers like to slather their TVs in for the sake of making them seem more exceptional than they really might be. Here we ignore fake color brilliance labels and disingenuous terminology like a TVs “Motion Rate” (which mainly just describes a completely invented motion refresh rate that has nothing to do with what the TV panel can actually do) and other such jargon.

Selecting a better performing TV with more limited ‘extras’ will leave you with a better experience all round because, let’s be honest, an Amazon Fire TV stick will give you all the smartness you’re likely to need for less than £40 and it can be chucked away and replaced if and when it breaks.

The Samsung NU7100 may be 4K on a budget, but offers a mostly smooth, crisp picture with few artefacts. It doesn’t have the light output to really make its HDR compatibility count, but for the low price you’re getting a truly high-quality picture.

But when both TVs are so gorgeous, it does make you wonder if its actually worth investing a minimum of $10,000 for an 8K at this point in the game (and over $17,000 if you want the big daddy 82-inch).
