Not much to say here except that in terms of connectivity options, the Toshiba Fire 4K HDR TV covers the basics but only basically. QLED, on the other hand, is a proprietary technology developed by Samsung. QLED uses a filter of quantum dots to enhance color and contrast, and make do with dimming zones rather than individual pixel control. QLED TVs are a lot brighter than OLEDs (thousands of nits versus hundreds) though can struggle to show both light and dark images at the same time as a result. There are OLED die-hards who hate the washed-out colors of overly bright TVs, while many with Samsung sets would find the far dimmer OLED displays far less impactful.

Finally, to offer an overall look at the TV’s performance, an HDR clip from the climax of Aquaman was shown. Filled with colorful underwater action and vibrant, glowing creatures, the scene actually provided a great showcase for both TVs — though in its default Cinema mode, the LG NanoCell had more robust specular highlights and richer colors. The golden yellow hue of Aquaman’s suit and glowing trident were especially impressive, casting just a bit more vibrancy on the SM9500 than on the Samsung. With that said, the difference was pretty subtle and black levels from head-on did still looked a bit better on the QLED.

Mercifully, there are more affordable sets if you’re willing to ‘settle’ for 4K. The Master Series A9G OLED line is priced higher than last year’s A8F models with a starting price of $3,500 for the 55-inch version and a peak price of $8,000 for the 77-inch edition. While that’s still expensive, you are getting the same Picture Processor X1 Ultimate chip as the Z9G as well as Sony-wide perks like Netflix Calibrated Mode, IMAX Enhanced and eventual AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support for Apple-centric households. The A9G range will be available between May and June, beginning with the 55-incher.

The C9′s colors are very impressive, but not perfect. The above chart shows DCI-P3 color levels as boxes and measured color levels out of the box, in the TV’s Technicolor (Expert) picture mode, as dots. The TV shows a very wide range of color, covering 93.4 percent of the DCI-P3 color space. However, whites run a bit cool, pulling yellows a bit toward green and magentas a bit toward blue. It isn’t nearly as accurate as the Samsung Q9FN, which still impresses us with its color performance.
