The LG 55SM90 (LG SM9000 in the US) is cheaper than the Sony but still costs more than the Q70. It has full array local dimming, and also includes NanoCell technology for better colours and deeper blacks, wider viewing angles, and the second generation Alpha7 processor. LG doesn’t support HDR10+ either, but like Sony there’s Dolby Vision and Atmos, along with webOS 4.5, Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa built-in, and an ultra low input lag.
As with LG’s new 4K OLED TVs, the OLED88Z9’s connections will include four full-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 ports. This is actually more important here than it is on the 4K sets, since they can support 8K streams at up to 60Hz (vs 30Hz on previous HDMI generations). Assuming any external 8K sources actually appear, of course!
The Gen-2 processor is programmed to increase peak luminance time for SDR. In other words, when not in an HDR mode, the TV will sustain high-brightness areas for longer before dimming pixels to prevent them from getting too hot or wearing out prematurely. This helped keep the contrast looking impressive when watching during the day with sun pouring into our testing room, but wasnât necessary with the blinds drawn or when the room was otherwise dim.
You wonât find much in the box besides the TV. In addition to the stand, which comes in three parts accompanied by eight Philips-head screws, you get LGâs Magic Motion remote control, a couple of AA batteries, and a breakout cable for older A/V components. Like that VCR you canât wait to see upscaled on a 4K screen.
If you’re a fan of controlling the accessories in your home using nothing but your voice, you’ll be pleased to hear that the UN55NU8000FXZA has Samsung’s Bixby voice assistant on board — something the firm has been bundling on everything from refrigerators to washing machines, and from smartphones to tablets, as of late.
Despite that, the 70-inch LG UK619 is a bargain at $700 if you’re in the market for a high-end 4K TV. And for the extra $300 you’d have to add to that figure if it were at its usual price, you can pair it with a fantastic top-of-the-line soundbar, like the Yamaha YAS-207, for a more impressive viewing experience.

In contrast, the Samsung model offered a noticeably harsh look with visible edge-enhancement giving the scene an electronic appearance. And though overall color was solid on both panels, the LG TV seemed to carry a bit more depth in its default settings. Of course, the artifacts present on the Samsung could have been easily removed by adjusting the picture settings, but it is nice to see that LG is embracing a less processed look right out of the box.
This remarkable ’rollable’ OLED TV wowed all who saw it at this year’s CES in January. Watching a fully functioning 65-inch 4K OLED screen (no other sizes are currently in production) literally roll in and out of a piece of container ‘furniture’ that doesn’t look much bigger than a hefty soundbar is a sight that never grows old.
