Remember when 40 inches was a whopping size for a television? Nowadays the 40/42/43 inch range of TVs is seen as the starting point for a 4K display, so usually offers a handy compromise between picture quality and price.

The viewing angles aren’t as wide as the higher up models, but as long as you’re sat reasonably central that won’t be a problem either. Thanks to the VA panel, direct backlight and local dimming, the black levels are impressive and there’s plenty of detail in the shadows. We only counted about 50 zones, but Samsung’s superb local dimming algorithm remains highly effective regardless.

Scepter TVs are some of the most affordable on the market, because they don’t include any smart TV features at all. But if you have a device like a PS4 or Roku hooked up to it, you don’t need those features anyway. Save the cash and pick up one of these massively discounted TVs.

Finally, Samsung’s lower-tier RU 4K UHD TVs, which don’t include the quantum dot color technology of its QLED lineup, were also unveiled. The RU TVs come in three series, including the RU7100, which runs from its 43-inch $430 model to its 75-inch $1,600 model; the RU7300, which includes just the 55-inch model for $700 and the 65-incher for $1,000; and the RU800, which includes five sizes, from the $800 49-inch model to the $3,200 82-inch model.

Despite the disappointments that we noted above about the Samsung Q60 4K HDR LCD TV, we do like this television model and consider it a good performer in most ways. In certain key aspects of its design and performance, it is in fact a superb 4K HDR TV and gamers or action sportscast fans in particular are going to love its responsiveness and motion handling specs. Now, here are the key specs and features of the Q60R 4K HDR TV from Samsung that we most appreciated.

What didn’t look so promising was evidence of under sampling of colors on the 1.2mm wall, resulting in contouring in images that showed color gradations. Samsung personnel insisted it was a problem with the content and not the display video card and driver. There was also evidence of some latency between different tiles, as seen with moving images. Some tiles were updating a split-second after others, resulting in a judder artifact. There are still some bugs in the machine that need to be worked out.

Not much has changed with LG’s design, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The panel itself is still vanishingly thin when seen from the side, about a quarter-inch deep, with the typical bulge at the bottom that juts out another 1.75 inches. That bulge houses the inputs, power supply, speakers and other depth-eating TV components.

These premium 4K models still get HDMI 2.1 connections, complete with eARC support and the Auto Latency Mode/Variable Refresh Rate gaming features.
