The first 4K TCL range is the 4-Series (S401, S403, S405, S421, S423, S425). Unsurprisingly it’s not available in as small screen sizes but instead starts at 43-inch. There are also 49in, 55in and 65in models. Again it’s an LED but here with a 120Hz refresh rate. You have the option of wireless and Ethernet connections for your Smart TV apps, there’s support for HDR10, plus three HDMI 2.0 inputs with HDCP 2.2, one with HDMI ARC, a USB 2.0 connection, digital optical output and headphone jack. There’s a digital TV tuner, too, and you get TCL’s Easy-to-use remote. The TCL 43S425 and TCL 55S405 are two of the best-selling models here.
Not surprisingly given its price tag, the NU7100 isn’t able to offer the full range of depth and color accuracy to really make 4K movies and videos pop, which may partially be due to the set’s low brightness and edge-lit backlight. You don’t get the sort of light and shadow control of higher-end sets, which tend to come with more precise dimming zones, and there are times when bright lights on-screen can bleed into the surrounding area.
The TV has a 3840 x 2160 pixel resolution. It also has HDR support in the form of Dolby Vision, HDR 10, and Hybrid Log-Gamma. You’ll get a refresh rate up to 240 Hz, two built-in speakers, DTS Studio Sound, and Vizio’s Smartcast smart platform for accessing streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, HBO Now, and more. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi, five HDMI ports, USB, standard video interfaces, and more.
Sony has added a new 75-inch 4K HDR LED Android TV in its X9500G series in India, called the Sony KD-75X9500G. The TV sports a massive 75-inch display, with thin bezels and frame as well. This minimalistic design put the picture front and centre, and key features include Google Assistant support, the X1 Ultimate picture processor, Full-Array local dimming backlight, ultra-wide viewing angle, and a Netflix Calibrated mode as well. The Android TV comes with Android 8.0 Oreo support, 16GB of onboard storage, and Bluetooth v4.2 support as well.
When it comes to gaming functionality and responsiveness for both PC and console devices, the Samsung Q60 QLED is downright superb. This is this particular 4K HDR TV’s single greatest strength in terms of both visual performance and in how well it responds to playback of games from consoles or PCs at all sorts of different refresh rates, frame rates, color settings, resolutions and combinations of all of these. Additionally, the Q60R, like all of Samsung’s 2018 and 2019 QLED TVs, comes with FreeSync variable refresh rate synchronization technology, allowing it to smoothly mesh the onscreen refresh rate with that being outputted by the GPU inside a gaming platform that the TV is connected to. The input lag for console or PC gaming on this TV across several resolution, HDR, color and frame rate combinations is downright excellent, as the numbers below clearly show:
This solid 4K HDR option comes recommended by Kevin Roberts, a home theater designer, salesman at Towne TV, and self-described “huge Sony fan” who’s been selling TVs since 1985. Compared to similar-sized TVs in the same price range, this one has a better color chip and a picture better for side-viewing (which those who regularly sit at an angle from the screen will prefer, according to Roberts). It’s not the biggest TV on our list, but he says the viewing experience makes up for the small sacrifice in size. “You really want to make your investment in the best picture quality. You are better off spending the money on a good 49- or 55-inch TV than buying a 65-inch low-end TV that does not have a good picture.”
Need a 4K TV, but on a strict budget? Walmart has the answer: A 50-inch Samsung 4K TV for $420 — a total savings of $330. You’ll need to act fast to avoid disappointment though, as we’ve learned that the retailer is running dangerously low on stock.
All of the new models support voice control via Google Assistant and Amazon’s Alexa virtual assistant platforms. Google Assistant is integrated into the TVs and can be used to search content, summon weather and other information, and control compatible AV and smart-home devices. Alexa can be used with Amazon Echo devices to control compatible smart-home device once the Hisense skill for Amazon Echo is downloaded to the TV.
Samsung meanwhile is expecting a large drop in profits in 2019 after lower-than-expected smartphone sales and TV demand. Samsung has plans to compete with LG’s OLED tech, with its own QD-OLED (quantum dot-OLED) hybrid, but unstable finances have seen those plans get pushed a few years back.
If a TV sale isn’t enough reason to get some 4K UHD clarity into your life, maybe a free Dell gift card is. From 49 inches to 86 inches, a slew of LG TVs at Dell are on sale and come with free Dell gift cards up to $350. The gift cards can’t be used on the TV purchase itself, but they can be used on a PC laptop, pair of headphones, or anything else you may have been waiting to purchase.
The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) named LG Electronics USA the exclusive “Official 4K UHD TV Partner” for the 2019 NAB Show, which transcends traditional broadcasting and embraces content delivery to new screens in new ways. In addition, LG Business Solutions was selected to provide innovative new commercial displays for the “Road to ATSC 3.0” Next Gen TV exhibit in the North Hall and the high-profile Next Gen TV information center in the convention center’s lobby.
