Input lag is the amount of time between when a TV receives a signal and the screen updates. In most picture modes, the RU8000 shows an unacceptably high input lag of 81.3ms. Enabling the Game mode, which improves input lag at the slight expense of picture quality, drops that down to a still-high 45.4ms. However, you can cut that lag down to a third by going into the TV’s settings and manually disabling all motion-enhancing features in Game mode (found under External Device Manager in the General settings menu). This will drop the input lag to an excellent 15.8ms, making the RU8000 qualify as one of our best TVs for gaming.

For 4K HDR content, we played our standard slew of clips from Netflix which included DareDevil, Star Trek and more. The manufacturers tell us that the brightness of the TV is 350 nits which is a lot less than the requirement for HDR but is in line with what we’ve seen on other TVs in this price segment. The good news is that content is well viewable even in a lit room with the downside being that sequences in the dark seem dimmer than they should when watching HDR content. You can switch off the HDR playback via the settings of the TV to get SDR playback and that may help with some content in dimly lit situations. 

As for Toshiba Fire’s upscaling, it works well at sharpening almost any reasonably well formatted source of content. It however operates at its best when being applied 1080p HD video and 720p programming of any kind. The native 4K resolution of the Toshiba Fire Amazon TV is great, and fully fleshed out without pixel-filling trickery like white sub-pixels.

A mix of lower LCD prices, more intense competition and new ways to profit off the consumer once the set enters our homes have turned the boob tube into something more like a razor. And we, the viewers, are the razor blades.
